Abstract

619,341. Jointing; casting composite articles. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, & CIE. Dec. 3, 1946, No. 35804. Convention date, Dec. 4, 1945. [Classes 83 (i) and 83 (iv)] Graphite or other carbon is joined to iron or iron alloys, for electrodes, resistances, &c. used in furnaces, vacuum or gas-filled discharge apparatus &c., by heating them while in contact to a temperature below the melting point of the metal but hot enough to effect carburization of the metal and fusion of the carbide. This temperature may be 200-300‹ C. below said melting point and the heating may be effected in a vacuum or inert gas and by an electric current as in welding. An iron rod 1 and a graphite rod 2, machined to make close contact, may be joined in this way, a recess 3 and bores 6 being provided in the latter to receive the fused iron carbide. Slits 4 may also be formed in the graphite to prevent damage due to difference in expansion. Tubes 10, 12, Fig. 4, may be joined in the same way.
