Abstract
619,027. Folding chairs. BROWN, J. F. Nov. 21, 1946, Nos. 34498/46 and 14021/47. [Class 52 (ii)] A collapsable chair comprises a U-shaped back part 10, two side parts 11, 12 which can be rotated on their longitudinal axes on the part 10 to bring all three parts into the same plane, and a cross-member 13 connecting the side parts and supporting the front of a hammock seat 14. The cross-member may be removable or pivoted to the side members 11, 12, which are extended to form feet 11a, 12a. Tubular dowels 16 fixed into the ends of the U-shaped back part 10 penetrate the upper ends of the side parts, separation being prevented by pins engaging slots 18 in the dowels to allow rotation of the parts through 90 degrees to the folded position, Fig. 2. The cross-member 13 may have spring clips at its ends detachably engaging the side members, or as shown may have sleeves 19 loosely embracing the side members and having notches 20, 20a in their lower ends. The sleeves 19 are slidable on the side members, the sliding movement being limited by stops 22, and in the position of use the notches 20 engage pins 21 on the side members. To collapse, the crossmember is lifted, the side members turned through 90‹ and the cross-member lowered so that the notches 20a engage the pins 21. Each side part may be provided with a strut 15. When the cross-member 13 is removable it may clip between two stops on the side members in the position of use, and on to parallel portions of the sides or the back when folded.
