Abstract

Polythene or a compound containing polythene is joined to a base material of a different nature by means of an intermediate layer of polyisobutylene, secured or adapted to be secured to the polythene, which is soaked in or impregnated with a polymerizable organic-compound and the two bodies to be joined held together under pressure. The polymerizable compound may contain a catalyst, e.g. benzoyl peroxide and may be polymerized by means of heat. The polythene compound may be polyethylene-polyiso-butylene and the base material steel, zinc, copper, another metal, ceramics, porcelain, rubber or a p thermosetting plastic. The polymisable compound may be one containing a vinyl grouping or a substituted vinyl grouping and examples given are styrene, dichlorstyrene and methyl methacrylate. The intermediate layer may be joined to the polyethylene, before the soaking treatment, by application in solution and then evaporating the solvent which may be xylene or trichlorethylene.
