Abstract

Water-soluble dyestuffs, especially direct cotton dyestuffs of the azo and stilbene-azo series, are obtained in pulverulent form by drying the water-soluble dyestuffs, or mixtures of the water-soluble dyestuffs in water-soluble form with other coloured or colourless water-soluble compounds, in the presence of one or more surface-active agents selected from the following classes: (1) aliphatic alcohols containing at least 12 carbon atoms and obtainable from natural oils and fats (e.g. cetyl or oleyl alcohol), and their sulphates and salts thereof (e.g. the sodium salt of sulphated sperm oil alcohols); (2) aliphatic acids containing at least 12 carbon atoms and obtainable from natural oils and fats, and their salts and esters (e.g. oleic acid and its sodium and diphenylguanidine salts); (3) aliphatic or aromatic amines, amides and quaternary ammonium salts with at least one aliphatic radical containing at least 12 carbon atoms attached to the nitrogen atom (e.g. cetyltrimethylammonium bromide or sodium 4 - oleylamino - 1 - methoxybenzene - 2 - sulphonate); (4) condensation products of ethylene oxide with alcohols, phenols, carboxylic acids, amines or amides (e.g. cetyl alcohol condensed with 4, 17 or 30 molecular proportions of ethylene oxide or sperm oil alcohols condensed with 2.5 molecular proportions of ethylene oxide). The surface-active agent may be added at any stage in the manufacture of the dyestuff paste, conveniently to the solution or suspension of the dyestuff immediately before or during salting out, or (in solution) to the dyestuff immediately before the final drying operation, which may be carried out in any known type of dryer or by admixture with a water absorbing salt (e.g. sodium sulphate). Examples describe the application of the process to the following dyestuffs: (1), (4), (6) and (7) the product obtained by condensing 4 : 41 - dinitrodibenzyl - 2 - sulphonic acid with 2 - methyl - 5 - methoxy - 4 - aminoazobenzene - 41 - sulphonic acid in the presence of caustic soda; (2) Rhodamine B base; (3) and (5) the product obtained by condensing 4 : 41-dinitrodibenzyl-2 : 21-disulphonic acid with 4-aminoazobenzene-41-sulphonic acid in the presence of caustic soda.
