Aliphatic or cycloaliphatic alcohols containing ten or more carbon atoms or mixtures thereof are treated with an acetylating agent before sulphonation with chlorsulphonic acid or oleum containing more than 10 per cent sulphur trioxide. The products are stated to be wetting agents and detergents, and may be used in the textile industry, e.g. in dyeing or in the laundry. In examples: (1) the oil obtained by acetylation of the alcohols from wool fat is sulphonated with 20 per cent oleum and then neutralized with caustic soda: (2) octadecyl alcohol is acetylated with acetic anhydride and sulphonated with 20 per cent oleum and also with chlorsulphonic acid: (3) dodecyl alcohol is acetylated and sulphonated with 20 per cent oleum. It is worked up by pouring the product on to a paste of soda ash, evaporating to dryness and concentrating the solution obtained by extraction with alcohol. Ceryl, cetyl, and myricyl alcohols and cholesterol are mentioned as suitable starting materials. Specifications 307,709 and 308,824, [both in Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], are referred to.
