Abstract
Aliphatic alcohols having at least 9 carbon atoms are converted into sulphuric acid esters by treatment with an addition product of sulphur trioxide and an organic tertiary base, in the presence of excess of the organic base. The following alcohols are specified: 2 : 6-dimethylhepten(2)ol(6), decen(1)ol(10), citronellol, 1-rhodinol, undecylene alcohol, butylcitronellol, phytol, wax and wool alcohols and erucyl, lauryl, myristyl, cetyl, stearin and olein alcohols and the following organic tertiary bases: pyridine, quinolines, dimethylaniline, picoline, trimethylamine, triethylamine and betaine. The products may be used in the textile industry, e.g. in carbonizing and finishing baths, and are stated to be wetting, cleansing and emulsifying agents. In examples: (1) olein alcohol in pyridine is added to a mixture of anhydrous pyridine and chlorsulphonic acid; after neutralization, the product is freed from pyridine and extracted with alcohol: (2) stearin alcohol is similarly sulphonated with a mixture of chlorsulphonic acid, chlorbenzene and dimethylaniline.ALSO:Aliphatic alcohols having at least nine carbon atoms are converted into sulphuric acid esters by treatment with an addition product of sulphur trioxide and an organic tertiary base, in the presence of excess of the organic base.
