Abstract
An isomer of patulin of empirical formula C7H6O4 and having the probable structure <FORM:0610859/IV(b)/1> or <FORM:0610859/IV(b)/2> is prepared by treating tetrahydro-g -pyrone in an inert solvent with an alkyl oxalate in the presence of a reagent suitable for effecting a Claisen reaction, e.g. an alkali metal or its alcoholate, and the alkali metal derivative of b - alkoxalyl - tetrahydro - g - pyrone so formed is treated with acid to liberate the free compound which is then heated with a solution of hydrogen halide in an inert solvent.
