610,378. Sharpening knives of cloth cutters. MAIMIN CO., Inc., H. April 3, 1946, No. 10324. Convention date, July 4, 1945. [Class 60] A cloth - cutting machine of the reciprocating knife type having stones for sharpening the knife and gears for rotating the stones has means for shifting the gears to rotate the stones at different selected speeds. In a cloth-cutting machine as described in Specification 527,787, rotated grinding wheels 19 are swung in by cams 22, to contact both sides of a knife 4, and, with a grinder slide 14, are traversed the length of the knife. The drive to the grinding wheels comprises a friction wheel 26 contacting the fly-wheel of an electric motor, which friction wheel rotates through gearing 39, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, a bevel pinion 46 which drives a second bevel pinion 47 in sliding engagement with a vertical square drive shaft 48 which in turn rotates, through gearing 49, 51, 52, 53, the grinding wheels 19. To vary the speed of rotation of the grinding wheels the pinion 44, which is rotatably carried on a link 55 oscillatable about a spindle 56 on which the gears 45, 46 are journalled, is moved, by a slotted gear-shift lever 62, out of engagement with the gear 43 into engagement with a pinion 59 driven by a gear 61 meshing directly with the gear 41, the pinion 44 driving the gear 45 in both cases.
