Abstract
609,716. Hydromechanical variable-speed gearing. WATSON, S. C. Feb. 23, 1945, No. 4593. [Class 80 (ii)] Relates to a variable-ratio gear of the kind, e.g. as described in Specification 549,237, comprising a main planetary worm train, of which the sun 7 is connected directly to the driving-shaft 1; the planet-carrier 22 is connected to the driving-shaft 1 through a hydraulic coupling 15, 10; and the ring-gear 30 is connected either directly to the driven-shaft (Fig. 1, not shown) or, where a greater reduction is required, is connected to the sun 78 of a three-element spurtrain, of which the ring-gear 65 is secured to the worm planet-carrier 22, and its own planet-carrier 68 is integral with the driven-shaft 70. According to this invention, a band or shoe brake 61 on the worm planetcarrier 22 provides a fixed-ratio reduction. An additional brake may be provided on the worm ring-gear 30 to eliminate coupling-drag on the driven-shaft. An external sliding-wheel reverse 71 may be provided or the ring-gear brake may be used for this purpose.
