Abstract

889,991. Variable-speed gears. CERUTI, L. April 15, 1958 [May 11, 1957], No. 11978/58. Class 80 (2). In an epicyclic gear providing speeds varying automatically from a fixed low ratio to solid 1/1 drive, wherein helical stepped planets 20, 80 in a balanced carrier 70 mesh input and output suns 1, 90 respectively, a spring-engaged friction brake 60 between the planet 20 which is axially slidable and the carrier 70 which is axially fixed is disengaged, above a predetermined output torque, by axial thrust of the planet 20 to provide low ratio drive through the gears, the carrier reacting on a fixed shaft 2 through a one-way detent 120, and is gradually engaged, with decreasing output torque and hence decreasing axial thrust of the planet 20, until the gear train is locked solid for 1/1 ratio drive, the detent 120 releasing.
