Abstract

574,028. Variable - speed gearing. BROWN & SONS (HUDDERSFIELD), Ltd., D., and TAYLOR, A. Nov. 23, 1943, No. 19556. [Class 80 (ii)] Consists in the use of auxiliary mechanism for enabling the range of speeds provided for by a gear-box to be extended. The gear-box has an input shaft a and output shaft b aligned with shaft a and capable of being connected thereto by a clutch c. The shaft a carries a gear d in constant mesh with a gear e fast on a sleeve f surrounding a layshaft g carrying a series of gears h adapted to be selectively engaged with gears h<1> on the output shaft b. The sleeve f carries the annulus i of a planetary reducing mechanism, the planet carrier j being fast with the layshaft g. On the hub m<1> of the sun wheel m is slidably keyed a clutch member n adapted to engage with its toothed inner end n<1> an internally-toothed gear o on the carrier j, and with its toothed outer end n<2> an internally-toothed gear p on a portion of the casing r. When clutch member n is in central position, no drive is transmitted, but when it is engaged with the carrier, the latter becomes locked to the sun wheel and the gear runs solid. If the clutch member engages with gear p, the shaft g is driven at a different speed.
