Abstract
605,404. Bridges; roof trusses &c. HAMILTON, A. M., and BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDERS CABLES, Ltd. Dec. 21, 1945, No. 34747. [Classes 20(i) and 20(iv)] Relates to bridges or bridge-like structures, e.g. trusses, constructed from standard parts and in order to effect close approximation to exact span lengths, even if those lengths are unknown when the standard parts are made the bridge &c. is composed of standardized bays in two lengths x and y, the difference between x and y being a fraction of each. By combinations of these two standard bays the steps between the bridge lengths so obtainable are much less than the smallest steps obtainable with standard bays all of the same length. Above a certain bridge length, the length of every step is the Highest Common Factor of x and y. If this H.C.F. is z it will generally be convenient to make z=y-x. In the example shown of a bridge required to span two unequal spaces L and M, an approximation to L is given by 2 standard bays of length x and 6 standard bays of length y; and an approximation to M is given by 6 standard bays of length x and 1 standard bay of length y. The necessary adjustments in connecting two different standard bays are provided by transition cords t and special gusset plates c. The lines of bolt holes dx, dy in the gusset plates are at different angles to suit the different angles of the two types x, y of bay. Other connections are similarly dealt with.
