Abstract
604,791. Tobacco-cutting machines. LEGG, Ltd., R., and LEGG, P. C. Dec. 3, 1945, No. 32667. [Class 5(i)] The knives 15 of a tobacco - cutting machine are formed of thin, sharpened, steel tape, the tapes being fed in a direction parallel to the axis of a drum 14 on which they are mounted by mechanism actuated by the rotation of the drum. In the form shown, tobacco is fed by converging conveyers 11, 12 to a mouthpiece 13, across the outer side of which the knives 15 are arranged to sweep. Each tape is wound between a feed spool 26 and a receiving spool 27, mounted on opposite ends of the drum, the operative portion of the tape being slidably received in a slot between bars 22, 23 mounted on the curved surface of the drum. The drum rotates on trunnions 19, 20 and is reciprocated axially during rotation by a rocking lever 60 pivoted on a fixed part of the machine and actuated by a worm 55 and eccentric 58, the worm being driven by the drum. The reciprocation of the drum causes rotation of the receiving spools through contact between rocker arms 47 and a fixed surface 54, the motion being transmitted to the spools through pawls and ratchets. The device may also be applied to a reciprocating-knife machine. the feeding of the tape being derived, in a similar manner, from the motion of the knife holder.
