Abstract

6-Propyl or -isopropyl-2-thiouracils are obtained by mixing together in an anhydrous solvent thioura and a suitable b -oxocaproate or g -methyl-b -oxovalerate depending upon the desired alkyl group in the thiouracil, and heating the mixture. Suitable solvents are ethyl alcohol, methyl alcohol dioxane, Carbitol "Cellosolve" (Registered Trade Mark) and pyridine. In examples: (1) thiourea is heated with ethyl-b -oxocaproate in the presence of sodium ethylate to produce 6-n-propyl-2-thiouracil; (2) thiourea is heated with g -methyl-b -oxovalerate in the presence of sodium ethylate to produce 6-isopropyl-2-thiouracil.
