Abstract
603,093. Variable-speed gearing. LEVIN, E. May 10, 1945, No. 11738. [Class 80 (ii)] A variable-speed gear comprises a disc 7 on a shaft 3 and having a plurality of concentric toothed rims 8 which mesh with a pinion 9 on a shaft 6. The teeth of the rims 8 are of equal pitch, and are so arranged that at one or more positions, the teeth or the spaces between the teeth on adjacent rims are in line. The pinion is moved from one rim to the next by a cam 20 on the disc 7 engaging ratchets 11, slidable radially in a frame 4 on the shaft 3, the ratchets being held in engagement with teeth 10 on a sleeve 6<1> on the shaft 6, attached to the pinion. The sleeve 6<1> may be locked in position by a spring-pressed ball 21 engaging grooves 22 therein. In a modification, two pinions may be used, the disc 7 transmitting power from one pinion to the other.
