Abstract
602,942. Driving magnetos. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and GRIFFITHS, L. Nov. 12, 1945, No. 30204. [Class 35] An impulse starter for a magneto has a restraining pawl 6 pivoted at 5 on the magneto end plate 1 to engage one or more notches 3a in a boss 3 secured to the magneto shaft and driven by a spring 9 from a driving member 8 which is also provided with a cam surface 8a for periodically disengaging the pawl. The relative displacement is limited by a tongue 8d on the driving member engaging a slot 3b in the boss 3 and the pawl has an extension past the tooth 6a for increasing its inertia and engaging a limit stop 7. The cam acts on the pawl at a bent-over lip 6b. It is stated that centrifugal mechanism may assist the disengagement of the cam at high speeds and the device may be adapted to operate in either direction of rotation by interchanging the functions of pins 5 and 7 and reversing the spring 9.
