Abstract

650,931. Clutches. CRAYFORD & BEXLEY HEATH GREYHOUND STADIUM, Ltd., and SOUTHAM, A. A. March 1, 1946, No. 6425. [Class 80(ii)] A driven member 3 loosely mounted on a driving shaft 1, pivotally supports at 3a a pawl 4 which has a laterally projecting lug 4a that can be brought into and out of engagement with ratchet teeth of a member 2 secured to the driving shaft. A control plate 5, loosely mounted on the hub 6 of the driven member 3, has pins 7, 8, 16 secured to it which pass through slots 9, 10, 17 in the driven member 3. A hairpin spring 14 urges a pin 15 on the driven member 3 and pin 16 apart. When a detent 11 is disengaged from a notch 5a in the control member 5, the latter under the action of the spring 14 rotates in a clockwise direction relatively to the driven member 3, and the pin 7 forces the pawl into engagement with a ratchet tooth. In this engaged position of the clutch shown in Fig. 2, the pin 7 holds the pawl from disengagement. To disengage the clutch, the detent 11 which may form part of the armature of an electromagnet is engaged with the notch 5a and the pin 8 disengages the pawl. A detent engaging in a notch 3b in the driven member 3 prevents the latter from rotating backwards. In a modification, the member 3 is adjustably clamped to a driven shaft and the ratchet 2 is provided on the hub of a pinion mounted loosely on the shaft. The clutch is applicable to ticket printing - machines, telegraph transmitters and other apparatus in which a driven member is rotated one revolution.
