[Class 41] In an electrolytic cell with horizontal anodes, e.g. a cell having a movable horizontal cathode of mercury, a fluid-tight seal between the adjustable anode supporting rod c and the cover e of the cell comprises a ring b of graphite tightly surrounding the rod c and supported on the cover e with a sealing member d between ring and cover and a metal cap a in which the ring b is fitted and means h for tightening the joint between ring and cover. A stirrup-like frame k for adjustment of rod c may be provided, hooked under cap a and has a screw l which bears axially on the rod c. The electrical contacting surfaces a and b may be coated with a thin layer of highly conducting metal such as copper or silver, electrolytically or otherwise. The rods c of several anodes of a cell may be electrically grouped in pairs or fours, and the caps a cast integrally, current being led to the groups by conductor strips bearing on flat parts of the integral cap units.
