Abstract
598,759. Machinery guards. COPPER & ASBESTOS WASHER CO., Ltd., and SPEARS, W. E. Sept. 8, 1945, No. 23190. [Class 80 (iv)] A safety device for guillotines and like cutting or shearing machines comprises an element 32 with a panel 33 of wire gauze which is secured to the moving head 10 carrying the cutting or shearing blade 11. In the raised position of the blade the guard element 32 is spaced, as shown in Fig. 2 from a co - operating table 19 pivoted at 25 so as to allow the passage of the material 17 which is being operated upon. When the blade descends the guard element 32 engages the upper face of the material 17 and as the cutting operation is effected swings the table 19 about its pivot. On the return stroke the table 19 is restored to its initial position by a bracket 26 engaging below the table. The guard is carried by rods 31 and spring pressed by springs 34 so that it gives on first coming into contact with the material on the working stroke. Instead of being pivoted, the table 19 may be secured to the moving head 10 so that it remains horizontal whilst moving therewith.
