Abstract
A bituminous composition contains bitumen, flake mica, and one or more fillers, the fillers constituting the bulk of the composition and the proportion of bitumen being of the order of 20-25 per cent. A preferred composition comprises albino bitumen, a colourless oil as thinner, and mica, with titanium dioxide as part of the filler, other suitable fillers being white sand and carbonate of lime. Asbestos and a small proportion of pigment may be included. The composition may be applied hot as mastic or in emulsion form, the bitumen being first emulsified in water, and the mica and other filler or fillers then added. The material is suitable for marking road surfaces and for signs near to roads where, they will be illuminated by car headlights, and a surface dressing of flake mica may be given to increase its reflecting properties.
