Abstract

2-Amino-5-methylpyrazine is prepared by reacting an alkali metal hypochlorite or hypobromite with aqueous 2 - carboxyamido - 5 - methylpyrazine, which may be prepared by esterifying 2-carboxy-5-methylpyrazine with a lower alcohol and then reacting with anhydrous ammonia. The amino compound may be extracted from the reaction products after they have been made strongly alkaline. In an example, 2-carboxy-5-methylpyrazine is esterified with methyl alcohol, the ester reacted with anhydrous ammonia and the resulting amide added to an aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide and chlorine to yield 2-amino-5-methylpyrazine.
