Abstract
A compound of the general formula SiCla Fb where a and b represent an integer from 1 to 3 and a + b = 4, is prepared by heating a compound of the general formula SiClw Fx with a compound of the general formula SiCly Fz, where w, x, y, and z represent O or an integer from 1 to 4, w + x = 4, y + z = 4, and a, w and y are different, and b, x and z are different. The temperature of the reaction is between 350 DEG and 650 DEG C. Dichlorodifluorosilane SiCl2F2, for example, is produced by heating a mixture of SiClF3 and SiCl3F or a mixture of SiCl4 and SiF4, condensing the effluent gases, separating the SiCl2F2 by fractional distillation and recycling the residual gases through the reaction mixture.
