597,179. Heat treatment of metal articles. BURMAN, J. C., and PALSER, J. June 30, 1945, No. 16680. [Class 72] In an apparatus for heat-treating metal articles an internally heated drum 4 of large mass and thermal capacity relative to the articles to be treated has slots or recesses 8 in its periphery into which the articles are fed from a table 11. The drum can be rotated continuously or intermittently, being supported on idler rollers 6, and is enclosed in a casing 1 fitted with refractory lining 2 and flue 14 to take the escaping gaseous products of combustion which, in the case of a gas-heated drum, pass from its interior-via the apertures 10. The articles are carried round by the heated drum to fall by gravity into the outlet 13. The drum may be heated by gas or oil burners 9, or electrically, openings 15 being provided in the former case to afford access for lighting purposes.
