Abstract
862,764. Tunnel furnaces. DEMAG-HUMBOLDT-NIEDERSHATOFEN G.m.b.H. Oct. 9, 1959 [Oct. 11, 1958], No. 34287/59. Class 51 (2). A tunnel furnace for carbonizing ore/fuel briquettes comprises inlet and outlet air lock chambers 2 and 6, preheating chamber 3, main heating chamber 4, cooling chamber 5, and a continuous conveyer with pervious trays 26, gases extracted from chamber 3 by a fan 14 partly going through valve-controlled offtake 23 and partly being directed to the cooling chamber 5 through cooler 25 and duct 22. The main heating chamber 4 is of substantially parabolic cross-section and comprises upper and lower combustion chambers 15 and 16 6 with axial burners 17. Chambers 2, 5 and 6 are defined by walls depending from the furnace roof towards trays 26, and each chamber has an offtake subject to suction preventing escape of gases from or access of air to the main chambers. Where the gases from preheating chamber 3 are combustible they are first burnt in a waste heat boiler, Fig. 5 (not shown), before being cooled and directed to cooling chamber 5. There is then a connection between inlet chamber 2 and cooling. chamber 5, and a suction hood precedes the inlet chamber. Suction hoods may be fitted at both ends of the furnace, chambers 2 and 6 being then supplied with cold inert gas, Fig. 6 (not shown).
