[Class 41] A cell for the production or refining of aluminium has a shell made of concrete or reinforced concrete instead of sheet-iron. The base of the cell may also be of concrete. Fig. 4 shows a cell for refining aluminium by the three-layer process and comprising a lining of magnesite brick walls 18 resting on a carbon bottom 17, both being enclosed in lagging 19 on a base 20 of refractory bricks. The shell 24 of reinforced concrete and the base 25 of concrete are made in one piece. The shell may be inclined outwardly from the edge of the base, e.g., at an angle of 45 degrees, and its thickness may vary between 10 and 20 cms. Production cells are also described, built from refractory brick masonry having a carbon lining with a cathode plate embedded in the bottom thereof, and provided with an outer shell of concrete, or reinforced concrete ; the base-plate may be of sheet iron, concrete or reinforced concrete, or may be dispensed with.
