Abstract
594,198. Fastenings. NAPIER & SON. Ltd., D., and MARCELL, R. C. June 28, 1945, No. 16504. [Class 44] In a hook fastening of toggle-lever type for aircraft cowlings or other panels, the operating lever C is in the form of a plate which, in fastened position, lies flush with the panel surface A, and carries at its free end a pivoted plate L which also, in fastened position, lies flush with the panel surface, this plate having an internal hook L<1> engaging a fixed pin A<3> to hold the lever in fastened position. As shown, the lever C has side flanges C<1> receiving near one end the pivot pin B by which the lever is pivotally mounted between stiffening members A<1> behind the panel face, and, near the free end, receive pivot pin K on which plate L is pivotally mounted, The hook E is pivotally mounted between the flanges C<1> of the lever, on a pin D located between the pivots B, K. A spring H round pivot B biasses lever C clockwise, Figs. 2, 4, to release position, a spring G round pivot D biasses hook E anticlockwise to engaging position, and a spring M round pivot K biasses plate L and hook L<1> anticlockwise to the position flush with lever C as in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 shows the fastening in released position with the panel displaced from its seating. Hook E engages a fixed pin F carried on the fixed framework. If the panel is hinged at the side remote from the fastening, the fastening comprises only the parts already described. When the panel is swung on to its seating, hook E engages pin F and the lever is then moved anticlockwise from the projecting position of Fig. 2 to the flush position of Fig. 4, toggle action pulling the hook into firm engagement and the panel firmly on to its seating. In this position an adjustable stop C<3> provided on lever C bears against a nose E<3> on hook E to hold the hook positively in engagement with pin F. At the same time, hook L<1> snaps into engagement with pin A<3> to retain the lever in fastening position. Lever C is cut away to leave a bifurcated portion having side limbs C<2>, Fig. 5, between which a tongue-like portion L<2> of plate L nests. To release the fastening pressure is applied to tongue L<2>, tilting plate L to release hook L from pin A<3> as seen in Fig. 4. The exposed ribbed end L<3> of plate L can then be grasped to pull lever C to the position shown in Fig. 2, aided by spring H. When, as shown in Fig. 2 the panel is not hinged, but is bodily removable from its seating, an additional fastening for the edge remote from the fastening so far described is provided. This comprises a hook N pivoted on the fixed framework and biassed anticlockwise by a spring P, and a cross-pin R engageable by the hook N. The cross-pin is mounted between the side limbs of a forked member S and is slidable along slots Q<1> provided in a pair of plates Q fixed to the stiffening members A<1> of the panel. Member S is connected by a rod S<1> of adjustable length to a forked member S<2> the limbs of which are pivoted at J to the side flanges C<1> of lever C. Pivot J is on the side of pivot B remote from pivot D of hook E, so that when the panel is applied to its seating with the fastening in the released position shown in Fig. 2, with crosspin R at the upper end of slots Q<1>, hook N engages under the cross-pin R and subsequent anticlockwise movement of lever C to fastening position as already described causes cross-pin R to be pulled downwards into firm engagement with hook N to pull the upper edge of the panel firmly on to its seat. The upper and lower fastenings are thus securable and releasable simultaneously. Any requisite number of hook fastenings E may be provided and suitably spaced, and these may engage a common pin F extending across the panel. Similarly, pin R may extend across the panel so as to be engageable by any requisite number of suitably spaced hooks N.
