Abstract

980,586. Parachutes. IRVING AIR CHUTE OF GREAT BRITAIN Ltd. Dec. 13, 1963 [Jan. 4, 1963], No. 563/63. Heading B7G. A parachute pack or harness has in combination a handle for pulling a rip-cord to open said parachute pack, one end of said handle being pivotally connected to said pack or harness, said handle being adapted for connection with said rip-cord so that in rotation of said handle about said pivotal connection to pull on a rip-cord connected therewith the handle serves as a lever providing a mechanical advantage to assist in opening the pack. A rip-cord 2, which is connected to locking pins of a parachute pack, is positioned by a flexible conduit on a stiff piece of webbing 6. A hinge plate 8, attached to webbing 6, has a hinge pin 10 of U-shape, the legs of which slidably engage bores in the end of a handle 14. A keyhole slot is provided in the handle 14 for engagement by a nipple 24 on the end of cable 2, a cover plate (not shown) being secured to the handle over the nipple to hold it in position. In operation, the handle is rocked about the hinge 10 to tension the rip-cord until it slides off the arms of the hinge pin, the full movement freeing the pins of the locking cores on the parachute pack.
