Abstract

Preformed solvent-soluble polyvinyl acetal resins are insolubilized by heating, preferably between 100 DEG and 200 DEG C., a blend of the resin containing at least 2 per cent (generally 5-10 per cent) by weight of a specified compound capable of generating free radicals on heating. Listed compounds are acyl peroxides, metal alkyls, N-chloro derivatives of acid amides, amine oxides and inorganic peroxides. Specified resins are polyvinyl formal, acetal and butyral, polyvinyl dimethyl ketal, polyvinyl methyl ethyl ketal and acetals of hydrolysed ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers. Reinforcing agents, fillers, pigments, dyes and plasticisers, e.g. dibutyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate may p also be added to the compositions. The products are useful as thermosetting adhesives, moulded articles, coatings on fabrics, impregnants and safety-glass interlayers.
