Abstract

969,552. Polyvinyl chloride. COMPAGNIE DE SAINT GOBAIN. Feb. 5, 1962 [Feb. 3, 1961], No. 4325/62. Heading C3P. Vinyl chloride is polymerized at a temperature below 0 ‹C. using a catalyst comprising an organic peroxide and a trialkylboron complexed with hydrazine, said complex having the general formula R 3 B. NH 2 -NH 2 where R is an alkyl group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The peroxides already known for the polymerization of unsaturated polymerizable compounds, and especially peroxides having polar groups, can be used e.g. monochloroacetyl peroxide in dimethyl phthalate may be used. A solvent such as methanol or acetone may be used in the polymerization. The molecular weight of the polyvinylchloride produced may be lowered by increasing the proportion of solvent added to the vinylchloride or by adding a chain breaker such as an aldehyde or a chlorinated solvent. To obtain a plasticized polyvinyl chloride the polymerization is carried out in the presence of plasticizers e.g. phthalates.
