593,703. Mixing-machines. JAEGER MACHINE CO. Jan. 4, 1945, No. 336. Convention date, Aug. 22, 1944. [Class 86] In a mixing-machine of the type comprising a rotatable mixing drum having a charge and discharge opening associated with a non- rotatable hopper, the hopper is floatingly supported relatively to the drum and a member attached to the drum and extending through the Hopper is provided with means for moving the hopper relatively to the drum so that opposed sealing surfaces on the drum and the hopper in the region of the opening are maintained adjustably in spaced relationship. Effective sealing contact is maintained by flexible and deformable sealing means provided between the sealing surfaces and carried by one of them. The joint between a rotary mixing drum 12, Fig. 2, and a non-rotatable charging hopper 16 is sealed by rings 17 of rubber, synthetic rubber, or other suitable material, provided between a flange 14 on the drum J and a flange 16 on the hopper 15. The latter is suspended by adjustable links from a combined water pipe and hand rail 18, Fig. 1, through which water is supplied to the drum through a flexible hose 18a, a conduit 22 and nozzles 25. At its inner end the conduit 22 is connected to a spider 24 rigidly attached to the mixing blade 13 of the rotary drum, and it is rotatable in a housing 26, rigidly mounted on the hopper 15 and containing a bearing assembly 32 retained by a nut 33 against a shoulder on a sleeve 29. The latter is threaded on the tube 22 and secured by a lock-nut 34, and its outer end is formed as a hexagonal nut, the rotation of which moves the hopper towards or away from the drum to adjust the separation of the sealing flanges 14, 16. A sealing ring 39 of resilient material is secured by nuts 41 around the opening through which the tube 22 passes through the wall of the hopper 15. A discharge opening in the wall of the hopper 15 is controlled by a slidable or hinged closure member 44. In an alternative form of construction in which water is supplied to the mixing drum by means other than by the conduit 22, the latter is replaced by a rod which terminates in a spider connecting it to the mixing blades adjacent the charging and discharging end of the drum.
