608,808. Stuffing-box substitutes. AKTIEBOLAGET SEPARATOR. March 1, 1946, Nos. 6415, 6416, 6417 and 6418. Convention dates, March 2, 1945, Sept. 20, 1945, Dec. 17, 1945, and Feb. 2, 1946. [Class 122 (v)] A sealing device for centrifugal separators comprises a sealing surface 7 between two annular sealing elements 2, 3 through which liquid is to pass during separation, one element, 2, being in liquid-tight relation with the separator bowl or other rotating part and the other element, 3, being in like relationship with a non-rotatable part, such as a fixed connection on the separator frame, through which liquid flows: the sealing surfaces are perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the bowl &c. and the fixed element 3 is self-adjusting to tilting movements of the rotary element without undergoing appreciable lateral displacement. The cap 12 of the discharge pipe 8 carries an expansion bellows 5 secured at its other end to the non-rotating sealing element 3 through a sleeve 4 having an engaging flange as shown or a tapered joint. Fig. 4 shows two concentric non-rotating sealing elements 3, 22 pressed against the rotary element 2 by bellows 5, 21, between which cooling liquid flows from an inlet 25 to an outlet 26 over a baffle 13. Cooling liquid may be fed through single bellows 5, the sleeve 4 being extended upwards and provided with cooling channels leading to the sealing surface.
