593,328. Photographic relief development. KODAK, Ltd., (Eastman Kodak Co.). June 14, 1945, No. 15114. [Class 98 (ii)] A reversed relief image is formed on a support (e.g. of metal) by the application thereto of a silver salt emulsion layer having a binder which can be hardened by development of the silver salt, forming a silver image therein without unduly hardening the layer, incorporating therein a hardening polyhydroxybenzene developing agent under conditions such that development does not occur, treating the layer (the residual silver salt of which has prior to this stage been rendered developable) with alkali to develop a silver image in the parts not containing the first silver image and harden these parts, and removing the remaining parts of the layer. The hardening'developing agent may be hydroquinone or catechol, and the alkali a mixture of sodium carbonate and hydroxide. Re-exposure and treatment with the hardening developing agent may be effected simultaneously or successively in either order. The silver images and residual silver halide need not be removed.
