Abstract
The cold bleaching of cellulose fibres (e.g. cotton or wood pulp) is effected by the action of a bleaching composition comprising a bleaching agent containing halogen in combination with an alkali or alkaline-earth metal (e.g. sodium or calcium hypochlorite), and an inorganic glycosate (preferably a b -glucosate) which is soluble in water but capable of precipitation by bivalent ions to form colloidal particles. By "inorganic glucosate" is denoted a compound of the general formula <FORM:0591537/IV/1> (wherein X represents hydrogen or an alkali metal, Y an alkali metal or the residue of a phosphorus oxyacid or an alkali metal salt thereof and R a carbohydrate radical) preferably prepared by condensing a b -glucoside with an inorganic salt or other compound of an alkali metal or phosphorus, e.g. sodium glucosates (X = Y = Na), phospho-glucosates (X = H, Y = PO3H2), sodium pyrophosphoglucosates (X = H, Y = P2O6Na3) and sodium tetraphosphoglucosates (X = H, Y = P4O12Na5). The proportions of the glucosate may be from 1 to 100 (but usually not more than 25) parts by weight per million parts by weight of bleaching solution. In examples, caustic boiled and washed cotton linters are treated with cold calcium hypochlorite solution in the presence of various quantities of sodium tetraphosphoglucosate (in which R is a glucose residue) and, for comparison, in the absence of the glucosate.
