Abstract
589,277. Arc-rupturing in switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 23, 1945, No. 7423. Convention date, March 24, 1944. [Class 38 (v)] In a circuit-breaker a number of parallel arcs are produced in narrow slots within an arcextinguishing structure, the slots being provided with communicating means tending to produce a uniform distribution of gases between the slots. The structure shown in Figs. 2 and 3 accommodates, within narrow slots 18, two parallel-connected fixed contacts 26 and two parallel-connected moving contacts 30, which occupy the position shown by dotted lines, when the breaker is open. This structure, which may be of moulded phosphoric asbestos, comprises outer walls 16, 17 and openings 32 to permit gases to circulate freely between the slots 18. For large currents more than two pairs of contacts 26, 30 are required, each pair occupying a slot 18, and a plurality of barriers separating the slots. A magnetic shield 28 is mounted between flexible conductors 27 and the contacts 26, to prevent magnetic forces produced by the current in the conductors 27 from causing the arc to move downwardly. Cooling means 33, 34 are provided as described in Specification 589,270.
