Abstract

588,901. Feeding webs. WOOD NEWSPAPER MACHINERY CORPORATION. March 9, 1945, No. 5980. Convention date, March 11, 1944. [Class 100 (i)] In a web-renewing mechanism for printing, wrapping, winding, or other machines, the pressing of the old web against the adhesive surface of the new roll and the severing of the old web are actuated by electric contacts or other control means on the opposite sides of the leading end of the new roll web. As shown, a new roll 13, Fig. 1, driven by bands 15 at substantially the speed of the old web 38 from a roll 12, has tabs attached to its leading edge. One tab T, Fig. 5, .consists of parts 54, 55 separated by perforations 56 and attached by adhesive to the outside of the leading part of the web and the adjacent roll surface respectively, and a part 57 attached to the back of the, part 54 near the perforations 56 and to the underside of the leading part of the web, the parts 54, 57 having strips of metallic or other conducting material 62, 63 ; the other tab is similar but without the part 57 or the strips 62, 63. The part of the web adjacent the tabs is coated with a suitable adhesive. During the revolution of the roll 13, the strip 62 connects two brushes 43 and, if the operator has closed a switch 47, contacts 49 are closed, the armature 36 of a solenoid 37 is withdrawn, and a brush 31 is spring-urged to a position where it holds the running web 38 in contact with the roll 13 to effect a splice. As the new web passes into the machine, the strip 63 connects a pair of brushes 44 to close contacts 53, withdraw the armature 41 of a solenoid 42 and release a knife 32 which cuts the old web. In a modification the conducting strips 62, 63 are applied direct to the web. Specification 572,659 is referred to.
