831,977. Applying tear strips to wrappers. GRIMSHAW, J. P., and AYERS GRIMSHAW Ltd. July 16, 1957, [Aug. 3, 1956], No. 24018/56. Class 94(1). [Also in Group XV] Mechanism for applying adhesive tear strip to wrapping material comprises a horizontal table 4, Figs. 1, 2, over which the material 1 is intermittently fed from a reel 8 and a rotatable carrier wheel 18 for the tear strip supported to turn on a vertical plane above the table and actuated intermittently so as to be operative during the periods when the material 1 is stationary on the table 4. The carrier 18 is provided with a plurality of tear strip reels 19 rotatable about axes spaced equidistantly around the carrier, each reel being supported by an arm 24 which is spring-loaded radially outwardly of the carrier and which carries at its outer end a roller 27. The strip passes around the roller 27 which applies it across the width of the wrapping material during rotation of the carrier, the strip being taken from each reel in turn as the reels move consecutively into the operative position. A solenoid operated cutting knife 32 severs the tear strip after the required length has been applied, movement of this knife being also transmitted to a pair of side knives for nicking the wrapping material at both sides of the tear strip to facilitate tearing when the strip is pulled. Spring-urged cam operated gripper 31 serve to hold the wrapping material on the table 4 during application of the tear strip. Supported at one end of the table 4 is a cam 30 which is engaged by an additional roller at the outer end of each arm 24 just prior to the engagement of the rollers 27 with the wrapping material and this ensures that movement of the wrapping material is unimpeded. A plunger 34, Fig. 7 (not shown), operated by a solenoid 35 is provided to fold the end of the tear strip back upon itself so as to prevent it sticking to an adjacent parcel.
