Abstract

733,803. Feeding webs. CHAMBON, Ltd. Oct. 7, 1953 [Oct. 30, 1952], No. 27351/52. Class 100 (1). An apparatus for splicing the leading end of an expiring web roll to a replacement roll comprises a device for arresting the feed of the expiring web, means for supporting the two webs in overlapping relation, a reciprocable guillotine for transversely cutting the overlapping webs, a pair of presser pads, each adapted for holding a strip of adhesive material and applying it along each side of the cut edges of the web, retracting means for withdrawing the severed waste portion of the expiring web, and driving means for operating the feed-arresting device, guillotine, and presser pads in succession. As shown, web rolls 6 and 7, braked by brakes 8 and 9, supply webs 6a and 7a. When the roll 7 is near expiration further feed, by rollers 63, 64 to a trough 61 housing a loop of web 7a, is arrested by rotation of a crank handle 42. The rollers 63, 64 feed the web faster than it is fed into a machine, thus accumulating the loop of web. The crank handle 42 rotates a cam 43, Fig. 3, not shown, which actuates, through a lever 68, Fig. 3, not shown, a rod 71 attached to a lever 72 which separates the rollers 63, 64. Further rotation of the cam 43 actuates, through rods 44, 46 and 50, Fig. 2, not shown, knives 25 and 26 carried on pivoted arms 31 and 28, such that the expiring web is severed. The replacement web 6a is impaled on pins carried on a bell-crank lever 54 while the severed end of the web 7a is impaled on pins carried on a bell-crank lever 55; but is released therefrom on downward swinging of the levers 54 and 55 caused by a spring (not shown). Further rotation of the cam 43 causes, through arms 36, 39, two presser pads 33 and 34 to swing together, such that adhesive strips, clamped to the pads, are pressed against the overlapping webs 7a and 6a. The cut end of the web 7a is withdrawn from the cutting position by a spring-pressed tension roller 18. The adhesive strips may be normally tacky, or rendered tacky by heat or moisture. Further rotation of the handle 42 causes the rollers 63, 64 to commence feeding the web 6a to the machine.
