Abstract
Some or all of the substantially horizontal surfaces of furnaces for heating (not melting) metals, particularly ferrous metals, or of chambers or ducts subject to high temperatures and to the action of hot gases, e.g., regeneration systems and dust collectors are covered with a protective layer of unbonded material rich in magnesian olivine. The layer, which is preferably at least 1-4 inches thick, may consist of pieces of the size of 1 x 2 x 2 inches, together with smaller particles, of dunite, peridotite, or a fused product rich in forsterite, e.g., containing 80-90 per cent. of forsterite. The surface to be protected may be formed of magnesite, chromite, chrome-magnesite, forsterite or olivine.
