Abstract

The basic refractory lining of a metallurgical apparatus is formed or repaired by mixing together particles of the basic refractory material with a gel-forming agent substantially free from aluminium and constituents reducing refractoriness, moistening the mixture and blowing it into place on the surface to be protected. The basic material may comprise moderately coarsely-sized hard-burned dolomite and a minor amount of fine magnesite clinker, chrome ore, or forsterite, and the gel-forming agent is preferably a plastic hydrous magnesium silicate found near Hector, California. 0.5-5 per cent of the gel-forming agent is sufficient, since larger amounts may entrap steam or show a plastic flow preliminary to drying. The swelling of the agent may be enhanced by grinding, using hot water or water softened with sodium carbonate or other alkali, or by incorporating sulphonated hydrocarbons. Sodium silicate, up to about 3 per cent of the weight of the refractory, may be included in the gauging water or may be incorporated dry into the powdered materials. The refractory mixture is preferably applied by means of a pneumatic gun.
