Abstract

A refractory gunning composition for the repair of furnace linings comprises dead-burned calcium and/or magnesium oxide-containing basic refractory of particle size - 6 mesh (U.S.S.) and minor proportions of an alkali metal silicate binder and pitch particles. The refractory may be dolomite and/or magnesite particles of which a major proportion are - 6 + 100 mesh, and 25% by weight or less - 100 mesh, and may constiture 80-95% by weight of the composition. The silicate may be potassium, or preferably sodium, silicate and may comprise 2-6% by weight. The pitch particles preferably have a softening point of 100-150 DEG C. and may constitute 3-10% by weight. An amount of 0.05-4% by weight of a gel-forming plasticizer such as hectorite, bentonite, ball clay, kaolin, carboxymethyl-, carboxyethyl, or hydroxypropyl-cellulose may be added, and the composition is tempered with water before application.
