585,916. Explosives. BAWN, C. E. H., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Nov. 11, 1942, No. 15905. [Class 9 (ii)] Particles of tetryl (trinitrophenylmethylnitramine) are coated with not more than 2ยข per cent of waxy substance, in order to avoid contamination of the skin when handling it. By using a coloured wax, the particles may be made distinctive in appearance. The waxy substance is applied in aqueous suspension, which may contain a " surface acting agent," i.e. an agent, such as sodium ricinoleate or ricinoleic acid, which lowers the interfacial tension between the water and the waxy substance. The tetryl may be added to the water first, then ricinoleic acid, then molten paraffin wax; the mixture is stirred, filtered, dried and compacted. Instead of paraffin wax, the substance may be a water-insoluble compound which is a hydrocarbon, alcohol or carboxylic acid of the aliphatic series containing at least 12 carbon atoms or an ester of the said carboxylic acid, or a sterol or sterol ester; examples are beeswax, wool fat alcohols and wool fat acids.
