Abstract

A process for permanently marking rubber or elastomers such as neoprene consists in intimately incorporating vanadium pentoxide in a rubber or elastomer, subjecting it to heat at a temperature which will cure or vulcanize said compound without change of colour, and then applying a metal stamp or die heater substantially above the temperature at which curing or vulcanizing takes place momentarily to the surface of the material, thereby changing its colour at the point of application. In a preferred method from 5-20 per cent. of the pentoxide is used and the composition vulcanized at a temperature below 140 DEG C. The die or stamp which may be combined with a cutting machine is preferably heated to 180 DEG C. The Provisional Specification describes also the use of pigments other that vanadium pentoxide which change colour under the conditions specified.
