[Class 100 (ii)] Set-off, preventing.-In printing textiles, finely divided powder is applied to the surface of an impression blanket, colour is applied to the textile while the textile is superposed upon the blanket, and the powder is then removed from the blanket. The powder is intended to absorb colour extending beyond the selvedge or forced through the cloth and to remove moisture remaining on the blanket after washing. As shown applied to a conventional textile printing- machine 10, printing on a web 27, powder is applied to an endless impervious blanket 13 by a rotary brush 30, and the blanket passes around an impression cylinder 11 and then to a washing and wringing device 16. The blanket may have an indented surface, powder being carried in the depressions as well as on the surface. Examples of powders are : talc, mica, vermiculite, infusorial earth, fullers earth, Bentonite, starch, dextrines, Georgia clays, Kaolin, hydrophilic gums such as karaya gum, locust bean gum, finely divided inert substances such as powdered silica and a powder such as Bentonite, which, when wet, will swell and disrupt the superficial colour coating on the blanket. Mixtures may be used. The proportion may be one to thirty pounds of powder to a thousand yards of textile.
