Abstract
583,133. Ironing-machines. HAYDOCK, J. Aug. 30, 1944, No. 16499. [Class 138 (ii)] Before flat articles such as sheets and table linens are passed through ironing- machines the hems are pressed between an intermediate fixed buck b and a movable buck a below and a movable head c above, all three being heated and the under surfaces of buck b and head c being smooth and polished and the surfaces of bucks a and b having layers of padding on resilient base. The bottom buck a is supported by two side members d each pivoted to an arm e on a cross shaft f and running on a roller g on an arm h fast to a cross shaft i having an arm j for actuation by a plunger k in a cylinder m supplied with compressed air by a valve n operated by an arm o. Similarly the head c is suspended from two side members p each pivoted to an arm g on a cross shaft r, and forced by a spring s to run on a roller t on an arm u on a cross spindle v having an arm w pivoted to a plunger x in a cylinder y supplied with compressed air through a valve z operated by an arm 2. Pedals 3 and 23 linked to levers 4 and 5 when depressed remove the arms o and 2 from the valves to exhaust the cylinders and ease the pressure above and below the buck b when the head c and buck a can be moved clear of the buck b, a spring 6 expanding between the arms j and w to assist the action. The hems being placed above the bucks a and b, bucks a and c are brought under and over the buck b the belt 11 is made to carry over the work to the cylinders to cause rollers g and t to press the hems, the body of the work piece resting in a trough 8 carried by the. members d and surrounding a cross arm q supported from a spindle 10 which has a pulley 12 acted on by a belt 11 attached to rams in cylinders 13, 14. Thus on freeing the hem between bucks a and b the belt 11 is made to carry over the workpiece on the arm 9 and transfer it to a conveyer 16 which feeds it to the ironing-machine, the hem between bucks b and c being released as the arm 9 completes its travel.
