Abstract

582,937. Velocity - modulated tubes; aerials. - STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., FREMLIN, J. H., and FOULKES, C. H. Feb. 19, 1942, No. 2222. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] A radiating antenna is mounted in the envelope of a velocity-modulated electron discharge device of the resonant chamber type. This may be of the kind described in Specifications 582,935 and 582,936 built up of laminations, which are closed at the ends by heavy metal plates 9, 10 ; the rod antenna 12 is in contact with the plate 9 being supported in an eyelet secured to the plate at an anti-nodal point. An apertured mica plate 13 is held between the resonator stack 1 and the plate 9 and between this mica plate and another 14 are mounted the cathode 5, control electrode 6, anode or reflector 7 and a collector electrode 8, this last receiving electrons through a hole in the anode 7 and being used as an oscillation detector. The antenna 12 projects through a hole in a plate 15 and into a glass end 23 which projects into a wave guide ; the glass end 23 is sealed to a metal extension 21 of the main envelope part 20, a ring 22 being welded to the extension 21 and forming an abutment for the end of the wave guide. The resonator system is carried from the pinch by a U-shaped plate 17. A double rod or other antenna may be used.
