Abstract
581,866. Mounting engines on cycles. BIRMINGHAM 'SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd., and STOHANZL, V. J. June 27, 1944, No. 12177. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVII] A cycle has movably mounted on it an internal-combustion engine 7 driving an eccentric 23 connected by a tension member 29 to the driving member 33 of a one way clutch and the driven member 35 of the clutch is connected to the rear wheel hub of the cycle. The arrangement is adapted to be mounted on an ordinary pedal cycle, the engine being used on hills or when more than normal effort is needed to impart impulses to the rear wheel to assist the rider. The engine is slidably mounted by means of a lug 5 integral with its crank case on a bracket 1 attached to the forward end of the rear forks 3. A spring 9 mounted at one end on the down tube 11 is connected at its other end to the engine. The eccentric 23 is mounted on the engine crank shaft and the strap 25 of the eccentric is connected to a tension wire 29 which at the rear end is attached to the driving member 33. Also attached to the driving member is a spring 43 mounted on the rear fork member 3. To start the engine it is moved by any convenient control so that a flywheel 15 engages the tyre of the rear wheel. When the engine starts the tension member reciprocates and as it moves to the left it turns the driving member against the action of the spring 43. On the return movement of the tension member the spring moves the driving member and at the same time imparts an impulse to the rear driving wheel through the medium of friction balls 37 of the clutch and so assists in driving the cycle.
