Abstract

579,621. Vehicle windshields. WORCESTER WINDSHIELDS & CASEMENTS, Ltd., and JONES, A. E. E. June 8, 1944, No. 10968. [Class 20 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIV] In means for adjusting windshields and other angularly movable panels comprising a unilaterally flexible chain operated by mechanical gearing, means are provided for releasing the chain from the operating gear so that the panel may be fully opened by hand. In the form shown, the shaft of a worm 3 engaging teeth on the outside of a chain 1 is carried by a sleeve 5 pivoted at 7, the worm being normally held in engagement with the teeth by an adjustable screw 16 engaging the sleeve 5. When the panel is fully opened after disengagement of the worm it is held in position by a spring-actuated cam 11, co-operating with the chain, which can be released by finger pressure. In a modicfication the screw 16 may be replaced by a cam. In a further modification the worm is carried by a slidable bracket which is engaged by a cam to hold the worm in engagement with the chain. In other forms the part of the chain adjacent the worm when the panel is nearly open is unprovided with teeth, so that the worm is disengaged and the panel can be hand-operated, or a chain sprocket wheel is driven from a worm through a one-way clutch.
