Abstract

578,449. Motor-vehicle axles. WELDALL & ASSEMBLY, Ltd., BURTON, M. G., and MARSH, H. March 15, 1944, No. 4780. [Class 79 (iv)] [Also in Group XXII] A rear axle casing incorporates a metal blank having two end portions which have been bent channel-shaped in cross-section and which are connected by a centre portion of a straight flat strip or strips which is or are bent into a part cylindrical shape to form the wall of'the banjo. The metal blank may be as shown in Fig. 1 with an aperture 2, the ends of the blank being bent into channel shape as in Fig. 4, the two flat strip portions 3 then being bent as 3a, Fig. 5, to form the banjo walls. The axle casing is completed by welding a cover piece on to the open side of the channel sections and an annular disc on to the other side of the banjo portion. Alternatively, the ends of a pair of blanks as shown in Fig. 10 are pressed into channel shape, Fig. 11, the centre strips 11 bent outwardly to form the banjo, as 11a, Fig. 13, the two welded together along the edges 12 of the channel sections, the axle casing being completed by welding a dome shaped cover plate to one side of the banjo and an annular ring to the other side.
