Abstract

583,295. Motor-vehicle axle casings. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd., and FLETCHER, J. Oct. 17, 1944, No. 20018. [Class 79 (iv)] [Also in Group XXII] A rear axle casing is built up from four members, each comprising an elongated main portion of semi-cylindrical cross section having at one end an enlarged segmental flange portion, so that on assembly the elongated main portions will form the two tubular arms and the four segmental flange portions will form the banjo. The elongated main portions are preferably flanged along their adjacent edges for welding together, and the banjo portion may have an annulus welded to one face and a dome-shaped cover to the other face. The left-hand side of the axle casing shown in Fig. 1 comprises a portion 1 of semi-cylindrical cross section having flanges 11, 15 along its ,edges; these flanges are welded to corresponding flanges on a complementary semi-cylindrical member 3, Fig. 4, to form one of the tubular arms. Each member 1, 3 has formed at its end a portion 19, 17 which together form half the banjo portion. A similar pair of members 5, 7 form the other tubular arm and the other half of the banjo. The banjo has an annulus 25 welded to one face and a dome-shaped cover 27 having an outturned margin 29 welded to the other face.
