Abstract
577,936. Directive wireless signalling. BROWNE, C. O. March 25, 1941, No. 4013. [Class 40 (v)] [Also in Group XXXVI] The binaural effect is utilized on an aircraft to determine the direction of reflected electromagnetic waves. Waves emitted at 1 and reflected by an obstacle are received on spaced aerials 2, 3, amplified at 4, 5 and fed to the separate earpieces of a telephone receiver 6, or to phase-shifters 8, 9 controlling the phase of audio-frequency currents produced by oscillator 7. To indicate to the pilot whether the aircraft located lies above or below his own aircraft, the reflected signals picked up by two additional aerials may switch the oscillator 7 to produce, say, dots and dashes where the reflecting aircraft is above and below respectively. To indicate the range of the reflecting aircraft, the pitch of the note of the oscillator 7 may be varied by an omnidirectional aerial which varies the frequency of the oscillator 7 according to the intensity of the reflected signal.
